Freshmen - Class of 2023

Welcome to High School! Freshmen year is a year of new beginnings, and it is not too early to start thinking about what you want to do after high school.  If you are thinking about going to college after high school, keep in mind that admission officers look at more than just your grades — they also take note of what you have done outside of the classroom. Your extracurricular activities, such as jobs, sports, clubs and volunteer work, give colleges a better sense of who you are and show them what you can bring to their campus community.  Make sure to check out the many clubs, sports, and activities that SHS has to offer, and get involved! Also, don't be afraid to try new classes or opportunities. Don't just pick courses based on what your friends pick. Pick classes and join activities that appeal to YOU!

9th Grade Timeline

Get to know who your school counselor is and about the services that are offered at your school.

Become familiar with the classes offered at the school and which ones interest you, so you know what some options are in the future.

Become familiar with your high school’s graduation requirements, as well as general college entrance requirements.  This will help you plan ahead to courses you may want or need to take.

Make sure you are enrolled in the appropriate college-preparatory or tech prep courses.

Get off to a good start with your grades.  The grades you earn in 9th grade start your high school transcript and GPA, which could help with college acceptance and scholarships down the road.

Practice good study habits and seek assistance if you need it.  There are study tables and math resource available. Speak to your counselor about these resources.

Explore your interests and learn about potential careers.

Get involved with extracurricular activities.  These are a great way to meet people, build your resume, and develop skills, such as managing time.

Start talking to your family about college planning and expenses.  This is often a difficult conversation to have, but a good one to start having early on.

Build good relationships with your teachers and coaches/sponsors.  These relationships could be important as you get closer to needing letters of recommendation for scholarships, colleges, or work.
